The Cabin In The Woods (2012) Review
Wow, just wow. Spoiler alert but "The Cabin in the Woods" is insane fun. You've seen the trailers? Good, I bet you thought this film would suck badly, right? Standard set-up, stock characters, what can be good about that? But guess what, it's all part of the plan...
Ok, I know I'm a bit late with this one, all the buzz about the movie is mostly gone but nonetheless, "The Cabin the Woods" is probably one of the most entertaining films you'll see all year. As I said the plot is nothing more than an elaborate setup with some truly gaga ideas in it but if you're a horror movie fan (by which I don't mean some gore obsessed 14 year old who thinks "Saw 3D" was a great movie) you should be in for a treat. This film was made by horror film fans for horror film fans and you can see every bit of fun they had with it on screen.
Knowing that the minds behind this flick are writer Joss Whedon (yes, the one who just made "The Avengers", the highest grossing movie of all time behind "Avatar" and "Titanic") and Drew Goddard (writer of the debatably good "Cloverfield") who are two outspoken geeks it comes as no surprise that they scattered the film with in-jokes. What I mean is that TCITW will be fun for the average viewer but if you know your horror movie history you will enjoy it even more.
Not since "Scream" have I seen a more self-aware horror movie that functions on so many more levels than just as your basic jump-scare romp. It doesn't hide the fact that it is basically a dumb, loud and silly premise, instead it very much embraces it with a great tongue-in-cheek mentality and becomes so much more by doing so. This allows the film to work almost as a parody of itself, especially when it comes to the whole subplot that involves Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford...
Alright, enough with the spoilers, if you're still not convinced, then screw it, go watch another soulless Hollywood remake of a beloved horror franchise (I'm looking at you, "Nightmare on Elm Street", "Friday the 13th", "Halloween", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", -- geez, how many more are there???).
