Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) Review

"Safety Not Guaranteed" is a sweet and good-natured film. What more can I say? Honestly, I really don't want to write anything else but that. Go and see it, it surely is a fine example of modern American indie cinema, it has all the ingredients, corky characters, an indie rock and pop soundtrack and indie darlings Mark Duplass and Aubrey Plaza in the lead roles.

Do you actually wanna know more? Alright, it's about Kenneth, a guy who places and ad in the paper looking for a partner to time travel with. A sarcastic magazine editor and two of his interns go after the story and one of the interns, Darius (Aubrey Plaza), forms a friendship with the supposed nutcase. Or is he?

Before all you Sci-Fi geeks get excited about the whole time travel idea, consider this a warning (or spoiler, however you like it): It's merely a MacGuffin, what counts are the characters and their relationships. Which makes it perfectly fine for me. Plaza and Duplass, coming off their success from comedy shows "Parks and Recreation" and "The League" respectively, are a good and likable pairing as Darius and Kenneth but the real deal is Jake M. Johnson as magazine editor Jeff who steals scenes left and right. On top of that, the film is set in Washington State, how can I not like it?!

But seriously, "Safety Not Guaranteed" is a good film that easily charms its way into your heart. It won't change your life but it'll give you an entertaining 90 minutes.
